Recession-busting tips # 2157: get your children to make their own birthday cake.

Happy birthday, William. And a glance back at 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

(Car spotters' note: the toy in Thomas's hand is the original 1960s Matchbox 'Models of Yesteryear' 1929 4.5L Bentley I was given at age ten; currently his favourite toy. William plays with its companion, a pale green 1907 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. Here's a Bentley in closer detail.)

  1. It's never too soon to teach them to cook!

  2. A Bentley of rather more recent vintage has arrived in the garage to replace the Rolls, dad will never be satisfied, there is always one more car he always wanted to own, so the buying and selling continues. Am waiting to spot it soon for pictures, but I am sure it shan't be as lovely as that one. In my favourite colour for old British autos as well!
    Happy Birthday and happy baking!

  3. Keep those boys barefooted and in the kitchen, I say.

Unless they're plumbing, or repairing autos.

  4. Diane, chocolate cake is a favourite at the moment. (I didn't post the picture taken ten minutes later, in which batter was somewhat more widespread.)

Jo, I look forward to seeing it. Models only here unfortunately. And the Volvo fleet has diminished thanks to straitened times.

Janis, my plumber and mechanic friends are busier than ever. People are repairing rather than buying.
